Linux Kernel up to 6.12.41/6.15.9/6.16.0 spi privilege escalation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.41/6.15.9/6.16.0. Affected is some unknown functionality of the component spi. The impact remains unknown. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: spi: cs42l43: Property entry should be a null-terminated array The software node does not specify a count of property entries, so the array must be null-terminated. When unterminated, this can lead to a fault in the downstream cs35l56 amplifier driver, because the node parse walks off the end of the array into unknown memory.

The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2025-38573 since 04/16/2025. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 276629 (Ubuntu 24.04 LTS / 25.04 : Linux kernel vulnerabilities (USN-7879-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 6.12.42, 6.15.10, 6.16.1 or 6.17-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 674328102baad76c7a06628efc01974ece5ae27f/9f0035ae38d2571f5ddedc829d74492013caa625/139b5df757a0aa436f763b0038e0b73808d2f4b6/ffcfd071eec7973e58c4ffff7da4cb0e9ca7b667 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
