Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in GNU Mailman up to 2.1b1 (Mail Client Software). This affects an unknown code. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Multiple cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerabilities in Mailman before 2.1.9rc1 allow remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via unspecified vectors.
The bug was discovered 09/04/2006. The weakness was published 09/05/2006 by Moritz Naumann (Website). The advisory is shared at sourceforge.net. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2006-3636 since 07/17/2006. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.
The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22730 (Debian DSA-1188-1 : mailman - format string), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156192 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for Mailman (ELSA-2006:0600)).
Upgrading to version 2.1.9rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
