GNU Mailman 2.1.8 code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in GNU Mailman 2.1.8 (Mail Client Software). Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. As an impact it is known to affect integrity. The summary by CVE is:

CRLF injection vulnerability in Utils.py in Mailman before 2.1.9rc1 allows remote attackers to spoof messages in the error log and possibly trick the administrator into visiting malicious URLs via CRLF sequences in the URI.

The bug was discovered 09/04/2006. The weakness was shared 09/07/2006 by Moritz Naumann (Website). The advisory is shared at sourceforge.net. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2006-4624 since 09/07/2006. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.

It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22307 (Mailman Utils.py Spoofed Log Entry Injection), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117413 (CentOS Security Update for Mailman (CESA-2007:0779)).

Upgrading to version 2.1.9rc1 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (28734), Tenable (22307), SecurityFocus (BID 20021†), OSVDB (28436†) and Secunia (SA21732†).
