A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Symantec AntiVirus 2006 (Anti-Malware Software). This affects an unknown code of the component NavComUI ActiveX Control. Multiple unspecified "input validation error" vulnerabilities in multiple ActiveX controls in NavComUI.dll, as used in multiple Norton AntiVirus, Internet Security, and System Works products for 2006, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via (1) the AnomalyList property to AxSysListView32 and (2) Anomaly property to AxSysListView32OAA.
The bug was discovered 08/09/2007. The weakness was released 08/09/2007 by Carsten Eiram with Secunia (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at symantec.com. The public release was coordinated with Symantec. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2007-2955 since 05/31/2007. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but an exploit is available.
The exploit is shared for download at saintcorporation.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115615 (Symantec ActiveX Control Input Validation Error (SYM07-021)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at symantec.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 12247.
