Details
A vulnerability was found in Shibboleth Service Provider up to 3.5.0. It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function SQLString of the file odbc-store.cpp. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a sql injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-89. The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
An SQL injection vulnerability has been identified in the "ID" attribute of the SAML response when the replay cache of the Shibboleth Service Provider (SP) is configured to use an SQL database as storage service. An unauthenticated attacker can exploit this issue via blind SQL injection, allowing for the extraction of arbitrary data from the database, if the database connection is configured to use the ODBC plugin. The vulnerability arises from insufficient escaping of single quotes in the class SQLString (file odbc-store.cpp, lines 253-271). This issue affects Shibboleth Service Provider through 3.5.0.
The weakness was disclosed by Florian Stuhlmann. The advisory is shared at shibboleth.net. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2025-9943 since 09/03/2025. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/15/2025). MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1505 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 264781 (Debian dla-4300 : libapache2-mod-shib - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (264781), EUVD (EUVD-2025-27518) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2025-2031). If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
