Summary
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.16.5. It has been declared as critical. This impacts the function add_interval. Executing a manipulation can lead to null pointer dereference.
This vulnerability is registered as CVE-2025-39920. No exploit is available.
It is recommended to upgrade the affected component.
Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.16.5. It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function add_interval. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: pcmcia: Add error handling for add_interval() in do_validate_mem() In the do_validate_mem(), the call to add_interval() does not handle errors. If kmalloc() fails in add_interval(), it could result in a null pointer being inserted into the linked list, leading to illegal memory access when sub_interval() is called next. This patch adds an error handling for the add_interval(). If add_interval() returns an error, the function will return early with the error code.
The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2025-39920 since 04/16/2025. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 277579 (Ubuntu Pro FIPS-updates 22.04 LTS : Linux kernel (Azure FIPS) vulnerabilities (USN-7910-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 5.4.299, 5.10.243, 5.15.192, 6.1.151, 6.6.105, 6.12.46 or 6.16.6 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 5b60ed401b47897352c520bc724c85aa908dedcc/ae184024ef31423e5beb44cf4f52999bbcf2fe5b/85be7ef8c8e792a414940a38d94565dd48d2f236/06b26e3099207c94b3d1be8565aedc6edc4f0a60/8699358b6ac99b8ccc97ed9e6e3669ef8958ef7b/289b58f8ff3198d091074a751d6b8f6827726f3e/369bf6e241506583f4ee7593c53b92e5a9f271b4/4a81f78caa53e0633cf311ca1526377d9bff7479 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
