Linux Kernel up to 6.12.45/6.16.5 ixgbe_lp_map out-of-bounds

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.45/6.16.5. It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects the function ixgbe_lp_map. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. Impacted is confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ixgbe: fix incorrect map used in eee linkmode incorrectly used ixgbe_lp_map in loops intended to populate the supported and advertised EEE linkmode bitmaps based on ixgbe_ls_map. This results in incorrect bit setting and potential out-of-bounds access, since ixgbe_lp_map and ixgbe_ls_map have different sizes and purposes. ixgbe_lp_map[i] -> ixgbe_ls_map[i] Use ixgbe_ls_map for supported and advertised linkmodes, and keep ixgbe_lp_map usage only for link partner (lp_advertised) mapping.

The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2025-39922 since 04/16/2025. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 269678 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2025-39922), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
