CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Office 2000/2001/2003/2004 (Office Suite Software). It has been classified as critical. Affected is an unknown function. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Unspecified vulnerability in PowerPoint in Microsoft Office 2000, Office 2002, Office 2003, Office 2004 for Mac, and Office v.X for Mac allows user-assisted attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted Data record in a PPT file, a different vulnerability than CVE-2006-3435 and CVE-2006-4694.

The bug was discovered 10/10/2006. The weakness was released 10/10/2006 by Dejun Meng with Fortinet as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared for download at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2006-3876 since 07/26/2006. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but an exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.

The exploit is shared for download at saintcorporation.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2682 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22539 (MS06-058 / MS06-059 / MS06-0060 / MS06-062: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office Allow Remote Code Execution (924163 / 924164 / 924554 / 922581) (Mac OS X)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110043 (Microsoft PowerPoint Multiple Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS06-058)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9169.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (29236), Tenable (22539), SecurityFocus (BID 20322†), OSVDB (29447†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1017030†).
