Redis up to 8.2.1 Lua code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability identified as critical has been detected in Redis up to 8.2.1. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the component Lua Handler. This manipulation causes code injection. This vulnerability is registered as CVE-2025-46818. The attack needs to be launched locally. No exploit is available. You should upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Redis up to 8.2.1 and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality of the component Lua Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Redis is an open source, in-memory database that persists on disk. Versions 8.2.1 and below allow an authenticated user to use a specially crafted Lua script to manipulate different LUA objects and potentially run their own code in the context of another user. The problem exists in all versions of Redis with LUA scripting. This issue is fixed in version 8.2.2. A workaround to mitigate the problem without patching the redis-server executable is to prevent users from executing LUA scripts. This can be done using ACL to block a script by restricting both the EVAL and FUNCTION command families.

The advisory is shared at github.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2025-46818 since 04/30/2025. The exploitation appears to be difficult. An attack has to be approached locally. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 269462 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2025-46818), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 8.2.2 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (269462) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2025-2196). If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
