A vulnerability has been found in Trend Micro ServerProtect 5.58 (Anti-Malware Software) and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality in the library Notification.dll. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Multiple buffer overflows in the ServerProtect service (SpntSvc.exe) in Trend Micro ServerProtect for Windows before 5.58 Security Patch 4 allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via certain RPC requests to certain TCP ports that are processed by the (1) RPCFN_ENG_NewManualScan, (2) RPCFN_ENG_TimedNewManualScan, and (3) RPCFN_SetComputerName functions in (a) StRpcSrv.dll; the (4) RPCFN_CMON_SetSvcImpersonateUser and (5) RPCFN_OldCMON_SetSvcImpersonateUser functions in (b) Stcommon.dll; the (6) RPCFN_ENG_TakeActionOnAFile and (7) RPCFN_ENG_AddTaskExportLogItem functions in (c) Eng50.dll; the (8) NTF_SetPagerNotifyConfig function in (d) Notification.dll; or the (9) RPCFN_CopyAUSrc function in the (e) ServerProtect Agent service.
The weakness was released 08/22/2007 by Jun Mao with iDefense (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at trendmicro.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2007-4218 since 08/08/2007. The attack can only be initiated within the local network. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25925 (Trend Micro ServerProtect Multiple Remote Overflows), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
