A vulnerability was found in Trend Micro ServerProtect 5.58 (Anti-Malware Software) and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function RPCFN_CopyAUSrc. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Multiple buffer overflows in the ServerProtect service (SpntSvc.exe) in Trend Micro ServerProtect for Windows before 5.58 Security Patch 4 allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via certain RPC requests to certain TCP ports that are processed by the (1) RPCFN_ENG_NewManualScan, (2) RPCFN_ENG_TimedNewManualScan, and (3) RPCFN_SetComputerName functions in (a) StRpcSrv.dll; the (4) RPCFN_CMON_SetSvcImpersonateUser and (5) RPCFN_OldCMON_SetSvcImpersonateUser functions in (b) Stcommon.dll; the (6) RPCFN_ENG_TakeActionOnAFile and (7) RPCFN_ENG_AddTaskExportLogItem functions in (c) Eng50.dll; the (8) NTF_SetPagerNotifyConfig function in (d) Notification.dll; or the (9) RPCFN_CopyAUSrc function in the (e) ServerProtect Agent service.
The weakness was disclosed 08/22/2007 by Jun Mao with iDefense (Website). The advisory is shared for download at trendmicro.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2007-4218 since 08/08/2007. The attack needs to be done within the local network. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25925 (Trend Micro ServerProtect Multiple Remote Overflows), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115619 (Trend Micro ServerProtect Multiple Buffer Overflow Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at trendmicro.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
