Details
A vulnerability was found in OpenBase 7.0.15/8.0.4/9.1.5/10.0. It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a symlink vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-61. The product, when opening a file or directory, does not sufficiently account for when the file is a symbolic link that resolves to a target outside of the intended control sphere. This could allow an attacker to cause the product to operate on unauthorized files. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
OpenBase SQL 10.0 and earlier, as used in Apple Xcode 2.2 2.2 and earlier and possibly other products, allows local users to create arbitrary files via a symlink attack on the simulation.sql file.
The bug was discovered 10/16/2006. The weakness was released 10/17/2006 by Kevin Finisterre (Website). The advisory is available at vupen.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2006-5328 since 10/17/2006. The exploitation is known to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed in Perl. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115658 (Apple-SA-2007-10-30 Xcode Tools 2.5 Missing).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (30115), SecurityFocus (BID 20562†), OSVDB (29794†), Secunia (SA22390†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1018872†).
