Details
A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Bugzilla up to 2.23.2 (Bug Tracking Software). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects an unknown part. The manipulation of the argument id with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. Impacted is integrity. The summary by CVE is:
Multiple cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerabilities in Bugzilla 2.18.x before 2.18.6, 2.20.x before 2.20.3, 2.22.x before 2.22.1, and 2.23.x before 2.23.3 allow remote authenticated users to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via (1) page headers using the H1, H2, and H3 HTML tags in global/header.html.tmpl, (2) description fields of certain items in various edit cgi scripts, and (3) the id parameter in showdependencygraph.cgi.
The bug was discovered 10/15/2006. The weakness was presented 10/15/2006 by Frédéric Buclin and Gervase Markham (Alex) with Shell as Bug 355728 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.mozilla.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-5453 since 10/23/2006. The attack may be initiated remotely. A simple authentication is necessary for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059.007 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 23664 (FreeBSD : bugzilla -- multiple vulnerabilities (6d68618a-7199-11db-a2ad-000c6ec775d9)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
Upgrading to version 2.18.x eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 4 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
