Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in WordPress (Content Management System). This issue affects the function pingback.extensions.getPingbacks of the component Pingback Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross-site request forgery vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-352. The web application does not, or can not, sufficiently verify whether a well-formed, valid, consistent request was intentionally provided by the user who submitted the request. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
wp-admin/admin-functions.php in Wordpress before 2.2.3 and Wordpress multi-user (MU) before 1.2.5a does not properly verify the unfiltered_html privilege, which allows remote attackers to conduct cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks via modified data to (1) post.php or (2) page.php with a no_filter field.
The weakness was published 09/12/2007 by Alexander Concha with buayacorp.com (Website). The advisory is shared at buayacorp.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2007-4893 since 09/14/2007. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 27753 (Fedora 7 : wordpress-2.2.3-0.fc7 (2007-2143)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at wordpress.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
