A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Microsoft Visual Studio .net 2005 (Programming Tool Software). Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing in the library wmiscriptutils.dll of the component ActiveX Control. Cross-zone scripting vulnerability in the WMI Object Broker (WMIScriptUtils.WMIObjectBroker2) ActiveX control (WmiScriptUtils.dll) in Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 allows remote attackers to bypass Internet zone restrictions and execute arbitrary code by instantiating dangerous objects, aka "WMI Object Broker Vulnerability."
The bug was discovered 10/30/2006. The weakness was disclosed 11/01/2006 by TippingPoint with TippingPoint and the Zero Day Initiative (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2006-4704 since 09/11/2006. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. A public exploit has been developed in Perl Module. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as attacked. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 23836 (MS06-073: Vulnerability in Visual Studio 2005 Could Allow Remote Code Execution (925674)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115448 (Visual Studio 2005 Vulnerability Could Allow Remote Code Execution (MS06-073)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4838.
