A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Opendarwin Darwin kernel 8.8.1. Affected by this issue is the function syscall. The fpathconf syscall function in bsd/kern/kern_descrip.c in the Darwin kernel (XNU) 8.8.1 in Apple Mac OS X allows local users to cause a denial of service (kernel panic) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a file descriptor with an unrecognized file type.
The bug was discovered 11/09/2006. The weakness was disclosed 11/09/2006 by Ilja van Sprundel (Website). The advisory is shared for download at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2006-5836 since 11/09/2006. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
After 2 days, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is available at projects.info-pull.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 24811 (Mac OS X < 10.4.9 Multiple Vulnerabilities (Security Update 2007-003)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context c. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115457 (Apple Mac OS X FPathConf System Call Local Denial of Service Vulnerability).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 5 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
