The do_hfs_truncate function in Mac OS X 10.4.8 allows context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (kernel panic) via a crafted HFS+ filesystem in a DMG image, which causes an access of an invalid vnode structure during file removal.
The bug was discovered 01/13/2007. The weakness was presented 01/15/2007 by LMH with MOAB (Website). The advisory is shared at projects.info-pull.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2007-0318 since 01/17/2007. Access to the local network is required for this attack. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. After even before and not, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is possible to download the exploit at projects.info-pull.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at apple.com. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
