GNU tar 1.15.1/1.16 TAR Archive GNUTYPE_NAMES path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in GNU tar 1.15.1/1.16. This affects an unknown function of the component TAR Archive Handler. The manipulation of the argument GNUTYPE_NAMES with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

GNU tar 1.16 and 1.15.1, and possibly other versions, allows user-assisted attackers to overwrite arbitrary files via a tar file that contains a GNUTYPE_NAMES record with a symbolic link, which is not properly handled by the extract_archive function in extract.c and extract_mangle function in mangle.c, a variant of CVE-2002-1216.

The bug was discovered 11/21/2006. The weakness was shared 11/28/2006 by Teemu Salmela (Full-Disclosure). The advisory is shared at archives.neohapsis.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2006-6097 since 11/24/2006. The attack needs to approached within the local network. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.

The exploit is shared for download at archives.neohapsis.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67428 (Oracle Linux 3 / 4 : tar (ELSA-2006-0749)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115527 (Apple Mac OS X 10.4.9 and Security Update 2007-003 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2007-03-13)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at savannah.gnu.org. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be establishing an alternative product. A possible mitigation has been published 3 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (30472), Exploit-DB (29160), Tenable (67428), SecurityFocus (BID 21235†) and OSVDB (30721†). The entries VDB-2060, VDB-2621, VDB-2824 and VDB-2832 are related to this item. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
