Details
A vulnerability was found in GNU tar 1.14/1.14.1/1.15/1.15.1/1.15.90. It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the component PAX Header Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Buffer overflow in tar 1.14 through 1.15.90 allows user-assisted attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) and possibly execute code via unspecified vectors involving PAX extended headers.
The bug was discovered 02/22/2006. The weakness was published 02/22/2006 by Jim Meyering with Entwickler-Team (Website). The advisory is shared for download at lists.gnu.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2006-0300 since 01/18/2006. The attack can only be initiated within the local network. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20964 (Mandrake Linux Security Advisory : tar (MDKSA-2006:046)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115527 (Apple Mac OS X 10.4.9 and Security Update 2007-003 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2007-03-13)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at gnu.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 16053. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9155.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (24855), Tenable (20964), SecurityFocus (BID 16764†), OSVDB (23371†) and Secunia (SA24966†). Similar entries are available at VDB-2621, VDB-2709, VDB-2824 and VDB-2832. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
