A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6/7 (Web Browser). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects the function OnKeyDown. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. The focus handling for the onkeydown event in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 allows remote attackers to change field focus and copy keystrokes via a certain use of a JavaScript htmlFor attribute, as demonstrated by changing focus from a textarea to a file upload field, a related issue to CVE-2007-3511.
The issue has been introduced in 03/22/2001. The weakness was disclosed 09/28/2007 by Ronald van den Heetkamp (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at 0x000000.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2007-5158 since 09/30/2007. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
