Linux Kernel up to 6.1.1 for_each_pci_dev reference count

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.1.1. Affected by this issue is the function for_each_pci_dev. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a reference count vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-911. The product uses a reference count to manage a resource, but it does not update or incorrectly updates the reference count. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: hwrng: geode - Fix PCI device refcount leak for_each_pci_dev() is implemented by pci_get_device(). The comment of pci_get_device() says that it will increase the reference count for the returned pci_dev and also decrease the reference count for the input pci_dev @from if it is not NULL. If we break for_each_pci_dev() loop with pdev not NULL, we need to call pci_dev_put() to decrease the reference count. We add a new struct 'amd_geode_priv' to record pointer of the pci_dev and membase, and then add missing pci_dev_put() for the normal and error path.

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2022-50659 since 12/09/2025. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 278317 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2022-50659), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 4.9.337, 4.14.303, 4.19.270, 5.4.229, 5.10.163, 5.15.86, 6.0.16 or 6.1.2 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 88f4ea623f59155280d99d1a59a968f838472c4a/e2f44baf62567c5cfbc274974c7d96dddad53ccc/6b9e43c4098f1310f5b4d52121d007a219fa5d43/5cc818ad53df650cac8fb41d9066665366af3f03/aa96aff394a511cc7bb7df08d1b8504d4d97671e/82bd423ed977847652b2048b0f8dcf049b1847a9/874f798c2db5ad595e46982d7f727a679dacb048/19b7b85773b18457ff85a9ff4f5e2a2d4bf7ed0c/9f6ec8dc574efb7f4f3d7ee9cd59ae307e78f445 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
