Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.1.46/6.4.11 and classified as critical. This issue affects the function smb2_reconnect_server of the component cifs. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-416. Referencing memory after it has been freed can cause a program to crash, use unexpected values, or execute code. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: cifs: fix session state check in reconnect to avoid use-after-free issue Don't collect exiting session in smb2_reconnect_server(), because it will be released soon. Note that the exiting session will stay in server->smb_ses_list until it complete the cifs_free_ipc() and logoff() and then delete itself from the list.
The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2023-53794 since 12/09/2025. The exploitation is known to be easy. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 03/29/2026).
