This vulnerability is registered as CVE-2023-53817. No exploit is available.
It is suggested to upgrade the affected component.
Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.5.4. This vulnerability affects the function mpi_cmp_ui of the component crypto. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: crypto: lib/mpi - avoid null pointer deref in mpi_cmp_ui() During NVMeTCP Authentication a controller can trigger a kernel oops by specifying the 8192 bit Diffie Hellman group and passing a correctly sized, but zeroed Diffie Hellamn value. mpi_cmp_ui() was detecting this if the second parameter was 0, but 1 is passed from dh_is_pubkey_valid(). This causes the null pointer u->d to be dereferenced towards the end of mpi_cmp_ui()
The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2023-53817 since 12/09/2025. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
