Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.4.6 (Operating System). Affected is the function shared_region_make_private_np. The manipulation of the argument shared_region_make_private_np_args with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Buffer overflow in the shared_region_make_private_np function in vm/vm_unix.c in Mac OS X 10.4.6 and earlier allows local users to execute arbitrary code via (1) a small range count, which causes insufficient memory allocation, or (2) a large number of ranges in the shared_region_make_private_np_args parameter.
The bug was discovered 11/28/2006. The weakness was published 11/30/2006 (Website). The advisory is available at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2006-6173 since 11/30/2006. The exploitability is told to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details and a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 24811 (Mac OS X < 10.4.9 Multiple Vulnerabilities (Security Update 2007-003)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context c. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115527 (Apple Mac OS X 10.4.9 and Security Update 2007-003 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2007-03-13)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 4 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
