Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in VUPlayer 2.44. Affected is some unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Stack-based buffer overflow in VUPlayer 2.44 and earlier allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a long string in an M3U file, aka an "M3U UNC Name" attack.
The bug was discovered 11/30/2006. The weakness was presented 12/04/2006 by Greg Linares (Expanders) as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared for download at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2006-6251 since 12/03/2006. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed in Perl. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 4 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116155 (VUPlayer M3U UNC Name Buffer Overflow Vulnerability).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9718.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (30629), Exploit-DB (2870), SecurityFocus (BID 21363†), OSVDB (31710†) and Secunia (SA23182†). See VDB-45968 for similar entry. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
