A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in SquirrelMail (Mail Client Software). Affected is an unknown part of the file webmail.php. The manipulation of the argument mailto with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. Multiple cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerabilities in SquirrelMail 1.4.0 through 1.4.9 allow remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via the (1) mailto parameter in (a) webmail.php, the (2) session and (3) delete_draft parameters in (b) compose.php, and (4) unspecified vectors involving "a shortcoming in the magicHTML filter."
The bug was discovered 12/02/2006. The weakness was shared 12/05/2006 by Martijn Brinkers (Website). The advisory is shared for download at vupen.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2006-6142 since 11/28/2006. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.007.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. By approaching the search of inurl:webmail.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156181 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for SquirrelMail (ELSA-2007:0022)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
