CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Adobe Download Manager up to 2.1. Affected is an unknown functionality of the file dm.ini. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Stack-based buffer overflow in the Adobe Download Manager before 2.2 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a long section name in the dm.ini file, which is populated via an AOM file.

The bug was discovered 12/05/2006. The weakness was released 12/06/2006 by Derek Soeder as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared for download at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2006-5856 since 11/10/2006. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. By approaching the search of inurl:dm.ini it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 23779 (Adobe Download Manager < 2.2 AOM File Handling Section Name Overflow), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115478 (Adobe Download Manager AOM Stack Buffer Overflow Vulnerability (APSB06-19)).

Upgrading to version 2.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4280.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (30742), Tenable (23779), SecurityFocus (BID 21453†), OSVDB (31055†) and Secunia (SA23233†). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
