merbanan rtl_433 up to 25.02 src/rfraw.c parse_rfraw stack-based overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in merbanan rtl_433 up to 25.02. It has been classified as problematic. This affects the function parse_rfraw of the file src/rfraw.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

merbanan/rtl_433 versions up to and including 25.02 and prior to commit 25e47f8 contain a stack-based buffer overflow vulnerability in the function parse_rfraw() located in src/rfraw.c. When processing crafted or excessively large raw RF input data, the application may write beyond the bounds of a stack buffer, resulting in memory corruption or a crash. This vulnerability can be exploited to cause a denial of service and, under certain conditions, may be leveraged for further exploitation depending on the execution environment and available mitigations.

The weakness was shared by Vlatko Kosturjak as SAID-2025-004. It is possible to read the advisory at github.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2025-34450 since 04/15/2025. The exploitability is told to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 279419 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2025-34450), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Applying the patch 25e47f8 is able to eliminate this problem.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (279419) and EUVD (EUVD-2025-204399). Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
