Summary
A vulnerability was found in OpenBSD 4.0/4.1/4.2 and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the component dhcpd. The manipulation results in memory corruption. This vulnerability was named CVE-2007-5365. In addition, an exploit is available. It is suggested to upgrade the affected component.
Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in OpenBSD 4.0/4.1/4.2 (Operating System). Affected is an unknown code of the component dhcpd. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Stack-based buffer overflow in the cons_options function in options.c in dhcpd in OpenBSD 4.0 through 4.2, and some other dhcpd implementations based on ISC dhcp-2, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (daemon crash) via a DHCP request specifying a maximum message size smaller than the minimum IP MTU.
The bug was discovered 11/07/2008. The weakness was presented 10/10/2007 by Nahuel Riva Gerardo Richarte with CORE IMPACT Exploit Writers Team (Website). The advisory is available at coresecurity.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2007-5365 since 10/10/2007. The attack needs to be initiated within the local network. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed by RoMaNSoFt and been published 4 weeks after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 27515 (Debian DSA-1388-3 : dhcp - buffer overflow), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117459 (CentOS Security Update for dhcp (CESA-2007:0970)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at openbsd.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 3 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (37045), Exploit-DB (4601), Tenable (27515), SecurityFocus (BID 32213†) and OSVDB (41687†). See VDB-44956 for similar entry. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
