Details
A vulnerability has been found in Cisco IOS 12.x (Router Operating System) and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block of the component Line Printer Daemon. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Stack-based buffer overflow in the Line Printer Daemon (LPD) in Cisco IOS before 12.2(18)SXF11, 12.4(16a), and 12.4(2)T6 allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code by setting a long hostname on the target system, then causing an error message to be printed, as demonstrated by a telnet session to the LPD from a source port other than 515.
The bug was discovered 10/10/2007. The weakness was shared 10/11/2007 by Andy Davis with Information Risk Management Plc. (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at irmplc.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2007-5381 since 10/11/2007. Access to the local network is required for this attack. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 17791 (Cisco IOS Line Printer Daemon (LPD) Stack Overflow), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CISCO and running in the context c. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 43274 (Cisco IOS Line Printer Daemon Buffer Overflow Vulnerability (cisco-sr-20071010-lpd)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at cisco.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 12712. In this case the pattern +|06 01 02 01 01 05 00| is used for detection.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (37046), Exploit-DB (30652), Tenable (17791), SecurityFocus (BID 26001†) and OSVDB (37935†). Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
