A vulnerability was found in Debian Linux 3.1 (Operating System). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function save_log_local of the component File Permission. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-269. The save_log_local function in Fully Automatic Installation (FAI) 2.10.1, and possibly 3.1.2, when verbose mode is enabled, stores the root password hash in /var/log/fai/current/fai.log, whose file permissions allow it to be copied to other hosts when fai-savelog is called and allows attackers to obtain the hash.
The weakness was released 12/17/2006 (Website). The advisory is shared at vupen.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2006-6614 since 12/17/2006. An attack has to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
