Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.62/6.17.12/6.18.1. Affected is the function put_user of the component ALSA. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a buffer overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-120. The product copies an input buffer to an output buffer without verifying that the size of the input buffer is less than the size of the output buffer, leading to a buffer overflow. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ALSA: firewire-motu: add bounds check in put_user loop for DSP events In the DSP event handling code, a put_user() loop copies event data. When the user buffer size is not aligned to 4 bytes, it could overwrite beyond the buffer boundary. Fix by adding a bounds check before put_user().
The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2025-68753 since 12/24/2025. The exploitability is told to be easy. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 02/13/2026).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 281757 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2025-68753), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 6.12.63, 6.17.13, 6.18.2 or 6.19-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability.
