Details
A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.1.159/6.6.119/6.12.63/6.18.2 and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function ext4_raw_inode of the component ext4. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ext4: xattr: fix null pointer deref in ext4_raw_inode() If ext4_get_inode_loc() fails (e.g. if it returns -EFSCORRUPTED), iloc.bh will remain set to NULL. Since ext4_xattr_inode_dec_ref_all() lacks error checking, this will lead to a null pointer dereference in ext4_raw_inode(), called right after ext4_get_inode_loc(). Found by Linux Verification Center (linuxtesting.org) with SVACE.
The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2025-68820 since 12/24/2025. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
