Mozilla Firefox before 2.0.0.8 and SeaMonkey before 1.1.5 can hide the Window s titlebar when displaying XUL markup language documents, which makes it easier for remote attackers to conduct phishing and spoofing attacks by setting the hidechrome attribute.
The weakness was disclosed 10/19/2007 by Stefano di Paola (moz_bug_r_a4) with Martijn Wargers as MFSA2007-33 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at mozilla.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2007-5334 since 10/10/2007. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1592.004 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 27540 (CentOS 4 / 5 : firefox (CESA-2007:0979)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156031 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for Firefox (ELSA-2007-0979)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at mozilla.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8960.
