The Client Server Run-Time Subsystem (CSRSS) in Microsoft Windows allows local users to cause a denial of service (crash) or read arbitrary memory from csrss.exe via crafted arguments to the NtRaiseHardError function with status 0x50000018, a different vulnerability than CVE-2006-6696.

The weakness was disclosed 12/28/2006 (Website). The advisory is available at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2006-6797. The exploitation is known to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. Required for exploitation is a simple authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25024 (MS07-021: Vulnerabilities in CSRSS Could Allow Remote Code Execution (930178)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90374 (Vulnerabilities in CSRSS Could Allow Remote Code Execution (MS07-021)).
