Use-after-free vulnerability in the Client/Server Run-time Subsystem (CSRSS) in Microsoft Windows Vista does not properly handle connection resources when starting and stopping processes, which allows local users to gain privileges by opening and closing multiple ApiPort connections, which leaves a "dangling pointer" to a process data structure.
The weakness was released 04/10/2007 by Derek Soeder with eEye as MS07-021 (Website). The advisory is available at research.eeye.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2007-1209 since 03/02/2007. Local access is required to approach this attack. A authentication is necessary for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25024 (MS07-021: Vulnerabilities in CSRSS Could Allow Remote Code Execution (930178)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90374 (Vulnerabilities in CSRSS Could Allow Remote Code Execution (MS07-021)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS07-021 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com.
