Microsoft Windows up to 2003 SP2 Kernel Mapped Memory access control

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Microsoft Windows up to 2003 SP2 (Operating System). Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code of the component Kernel Mapped Memory Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-264. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The Virtual DOS Machine (VDM) in the Windows Kernel in Microsoft Windows NT 4.0; 2000 SP4; XP SP2; Server 2003, 2003 SP1, and 2003 SP2; and Windows Vista before June 2006; uses insecure permissions (PAGE_READWRITE) for a physical memory view, which allows local users to gain privileges by modifying the "zero page" during a race condition before the view is unmapped.

The weakness was disclosed 04/10/2007 by Derek Soeder with eEye as MS07-022 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at research.eeye.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2007-1206 since 03/02/2007. Attacking locally is a requirement. A single authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25025 (MS07-022: Vulnerability in Windows Kernel Could Allow Elevation of Privilege (931784)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90391 (Windows Kernel Could Allow Elevation of Privilege (MS07-022)).

Upgrading to version XP eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS07-022 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (33270), Tenable (25025), SecurityFocus (BID 23367†), OSVDB (34011†) and Secunia (SA24834†). The entries VDB-3006, VDB-3005 and VDB-3004 are pretty similar. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
