A vulnerability was found in Foo Labs Xpdf 3.0.1 Pl1 (Document Reader Software). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function DCTStream::reset of the file Stream.cc. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Array index error in the DCTStream::readProgressiveDataUnit method in xpdf/Stream.cc in Xpdf 3.02pl1, as used in poppler, teTeX, KDE, KOffice, CUPS, and other products, allows remote attackers to trigger memory corruption and execute arbitrary code via a crafted PDF file.
The weakness was published 11/07/2007 by Alin Rad Pop with Secunia Research (Website). The advisory is shared at secunia.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2007-4352 since 08/14/2007. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67606 (Oracle Linux 4 : xpdf (ELSA-2007-1029)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 155992 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for CUPS (ELSA-2007-1022)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at foolabs.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 4 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 5804.
