CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in WinPcap 4.0.1. Affected by this vulnerability is the function bpf_filter_init of the file NPF.SYS. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Multiple array index errors in the bpf_filter_init function in NPF.SYS in WinPcap before 4.0.2, when run in monitor mode (aka Table Management Extensions or TME), and as used in Wireshark and possibly other products, allow local users to gain privileges via crafted IOCTL requests.

The bug was discovered 11/12/2007. The weakness was disclosed 11/13/2007 with iDefense (Website). The advisory is shared at labs.idefense.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2007-5756 since 10/31/2007. Access to the local network is required for this attack to succeed. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 28182 (WinPcap NPF.SYS bpf_filter_init Arbitrary Array Indexing Local Privilege Escalation), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at winpcap.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (38433), Tenable (28182), SecurityFocus (BID 26409†), OSVDB (42166†) and Secunia (SA27676†). The entry VDB-3170 is pretty similar. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
