Linux Kernel 2.6.23 CIFS SendReceive memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Linux Kernel 2.6.23. This issue affects the function SendReceive of the component CIFS. Such manipulation leads to memory corruption. This vulnerability is listed as CVE-2007-5904. There is no available exploit. You should disable the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Linux Kernel 2.6.23 (Operating System). Affected by this issue is the function SendReceive of the component CIFS. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Multiple buffer overflows in CIFS VFS in Linux kernel 2.6.23 and earlier allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via long SMB responses that trigger the overflows in the SendReceive function.

The bug was discovered 11/08/2007. The weakness was presented 11/14/2007 by Przemyslaw Wegrzyn as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2007-5904 since 11/09/2007. The attack needs to approached within the local network. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 31 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67665 (Oracle Linux 4 : kernel (ELSA-2008-0167)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165673 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update Linux Kernel Security Problems (SUSE-SA:2008:013)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. A possible mitigation has been published 5 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (38450), Tenable (67665), SecurityFocus (BID 26438†), OSVDB (39238†) and Secunia (SA29387†).
