A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in GNU Samba up to 3.x (File Transfer Software). This affects the function reply_netbios_packet. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Stack-based buffer overflow in nmbd in Samba 3.0.0 through 3.0.26a, when configured as a Primary or Backup Domain controller, allows remote attackers to have an unknown impact via crafted GETDC mailslot requests, related to handling of GETDC logon server requests.
The weakness was shared 11/15/2007 by Alin Rad Pop with Secunia Research (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at us1.samba.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2007-4572 since 08/28/2007. The attack can only be done within the local network. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 13609 (Solaris 9 (x86) : 114685-17), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at us1.samba.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
