PostgreSQL up to 18.1 Multibyte Character array index

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in PostgreSQL up to 14.20/15.15/16.11/17.7/18.1. It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown code block of the component Multibyte Character Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a array index vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-129. The product uses untrusted input when calculating or using an array index, but the product does not validate or incorrectly validates the index to ensure the index references a valid position within the array. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Missing validation of multibyte character length in PostgreSQL text manipulation allows a database user to issue crafted queries that achieve a buffer overrun. That suffices to execute arbitrary code as the operating system user running the database. Versions before PostgreSQL 18.2, 17.8, 16.12, 15.16, and 14.21 are affected.

The advisory is available at postgresql.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-2006 since 02/05/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 298910 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2026-2006), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 14.21, 15.16, 16.12, 17.8 or 18.2 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (298910) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2026-0409). If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
