ISC BIND up to 9.5.0a1 data processing

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in ISC BIND (Domain Name Software). It has been classified as problematic. This affects an unknown part. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a data processing vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-19. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

ISC BIND 9.0.x, 9.1.x, 9.2.0 up to 9.2.7, 9.3.0 up to 9.3.3, 9.4.0a1 up to 9.4.0a6, 9.4.0b1 up to 9.4.0b4, 9.4.0rc1, and 9.5.0a1 (Bind Forum only) allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (exit) via a type * (ANY) DNS query response that contains multiple RRsets, which triggers an assertion error, aka the "DNSSEC Validation" vulnerability.

The bug was discovered 01/25/2007. The weakness was released 01/25/2007 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at isc.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2007-0494 since 01/25/2007. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 17840 (ISC BIND Crafted ANY Request Response Multiple RRsets DoS), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family DNS, running in the context r and relying on port 53. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 185039 (HP-UX Running BIND Remote Denial of Service Vulnerability (HPSBUX02219)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8974.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (31838), Tenable (17840), SecurityFocus (BID 22231†), OSVDB (31923†) and Secunia (SA23904†).
