A vulnerability was found in CFNetwork 129.19. It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function _cfnetconnectionwillenqueuerequests of the component CFNetwork. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is availability. The _CFNetConnectionWillEnqueueRequests function in CFNetwork 129.19 on Apple Mac OS X 10.4 through 10.4.10 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted HTTP 301 response, which results in a NULL pointer dereference.
The bug was discovered 01/25/2007. The weakness was shared 01/25/2007 by Ilja van Sprundel (LMH) with RISE Security (Website). The advisory is available at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2007-0464 since 01/23/2007. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed by MoAB in ANSI C and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 28212 (Mac OS X < 10.4.11 Multiple Vulnerabilities (Security Update 2007-008)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context c. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115661 (Apple Mac OS X 10.4.11 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2007-11-14)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 8 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
