GPAC up to 26.02.0 NHML File Parser src/filters/dmx_nhml.c strcpy xmlHeaderEnd stack-based overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability categorized as critical has been discovered in GPAC up to 26.02.0. This affects the function strcpy of the file src/filters/dmx_nhml.c of the component NHML File Parser. Executing a manipulation of the argument xmlHeaderEnd can lead to stack-based overflow. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-27821. The attack can be executed remotely. There is not any exploit available. A patch should be applied to remediate this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in GPAC up to 26.02.0. It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function strcpy of the file src/filters/dmx_nhml.c of the component NHML File Parser. The manipulation of the argument xmlHeaderEnd with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

GPAC is an open-source multimedia framework. In versions up to and including 26.02.0, a stack buffer overflow occurs during NHML file parsing in `src/filters/dmx_nhml.c`. The value of the xmlHeaderEnd XML attribute is copied from att->value into szXmlHeaderEnd[1000] using strcpy() without any length validation. If the input exceeds 1000 bytes, it overwrites beyond the stack buffer boundary. Commit 9bd7137fded2db40de61a2cf3045812c8741ec52 patches the issue.

The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-27821 since 02/24/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 300487 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2026-27821), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Applying the patch 9bd7137fded2db40de61a2cf3045812c8741ec52 is able to eliminate this problem.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (300487) and EUVD (EUVD-2026-8784). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
