Apple Mac OS X up to 10.5.1 Block All Connections privileges management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.5.1 (Operating System). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality of the component Block All Connections Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, and integrity. The summary by CVE is:

The Application Firewall in Apple Mac OS X 10.5, when "Block all incoming connections" is enabled, does not prevent root processes or mDNSResponder from accepting connections, which might allow remote attackers or local root processes to bypass intended access restrictions.

The weakness was released 11/16/2007 by Jürgen Schmidt (Website). The advisory is shared at docs.info.apple.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2007-4702 since 09/05/2007. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 28252 (Mac OS X 10.5.x < 10.5.1 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context c. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115663 (Apple Mac OS X 10.5.1 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2007-11-15)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at docs.info.apple.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (38506), Tenable (28252), SecurityFocus (BID 26461†), OSVDB (40691†) and Secunia (SA27695†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-3482 and VDB-3483. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
