The Application Firewall in Apple Mac OS X 10.5 does not prevent a root process from accepting incoming connections, even when "Block incoming connections" has been set for its associated executable, which might allow remote attackers or local root processes to bypass intended access restrictions.
The weakness was disclosed 11/16/2007 by Jürgen Schmidt (Website). The advisory is available at docs.info.apple.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2007-4703 since 09/05/2007. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 28252 (Mac OS X 10.5.x < 10.5.1 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. Upgrading to version 10.5.1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at docs.info.apple.com.
