MySQL Community Server 5.0.x before 5.0.51, Enterprise Server 5.0.x before 5.0.52, Server 5.1.x before 5.1.23, and Server 6.0.x before 6.0.4, when a table relies on symlinks created through explicit DATA DIRECTORY and INDEX DIRECTORY options, allows remote authenticated users to overwrite system table information and gain privileges via a RENAME TABLE statement that changes the symlink to point to an existing file.
The bug was discovered 11/15/2007. The weakness was shared 12/10/2007 with MySQL (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at dev.mysql.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2007-5969 since 11/14/2007. Access to the local network is required for this attack to succeed. Required for exploitation is a single authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 25 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117388 (CentOS Security Update for MySQL (CESA-2007:1155)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at dev.mysql.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
