Microsoft Windows Vista SMBv2 Signing code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Microsoft Windows Vista. This affects an unknown part of the component SMBv2 Signing Handler. Such manipulation leads to code injection. This vulnerability is referenced as CVE-2007-5351. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. No exploit is available. Upgrading the affected component is advised.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Windows Vista (Operating System). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown function of the component SMBv2 Signing Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Unspecified vulnerability in Server Message Block Version 2 (SMBv2) signing support in Microsoft Windows Vista allows remote attackers to force signature re-computation and execute arbitrary code via a crafted SMBv2 packet, aka "SMBv2 Signing Vulnerability."

The bug was discovered 12/11/2007. The weakness was published 12/11/2007 with Microsoft as MS07-063 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared for download at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2007-5351 since 10/10/2007. The attack needs to approached within the local network. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 29855 (MS07-063: Vulnerability in SMBv2 Could Allow Remote Code Execution (942624) (uncredentialed check)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90417 (SMBv2 Vulnerability Could Allow Remote Code Execution (MS07-063)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS07-063 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 12947. In this case the pattern SMBr is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 5821.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (38725), Tenable (29855), SecurityFocus (BID 26777†), OSVDB (39125†) and Secunia (SA27997†). Similar entry is available at VDB-3504. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
