PHP up to 5.2.0 sqlite Extension imap_mail_compose format memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Furthermore, there is an exploit available. It is suggested to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in PHP up to 5.2.0 (Programming Language Software). Affected is the function imap_mail_compose of the component sqlite Extension. The manipulation of the argument format with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Multiple buffer overflows in PHP before 5.2.1 allow attackers to cause a denial of service and possibly execute arbitrary code via unspecified vectors in the (1) session, (2) zip, (3) imap, and (4) sqlite extensions; (5) stream filters; and the (6) str_replace, (7) mail, (8) ibase_delete_user, (9) ibase_add_user, and (10) ibase_modify_user functions. NOTE: vector 6 might actually be an integer overflow (CVE-2007-1885). NOTE: as of 20070411, vector (3) might involve the imap_mail_compose function (CVE-2007-1825).

The weakness was shared 02/09/2007 by Stefan Esser (Website). The advisory is shared for download at php-security.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2007-0906 since 02/13/2007. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details and a public exploit are known.

After 4 weeks, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is shared for download at php-security.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67451 (Oracle Linux 3 / 4 : php (ELSA-2007-0076)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12259 (PHP Prior to 5.2.1/4.4.5 Multiple Vulnerabilities).

Upgrading to version 5.2.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (32485), Exploit-DB (3413), Tenable (67451), SecurityFocus (BID 22496†) and OSVDB (32776†). The entries VDB-2920, VDB-2911, VDB-2914 and VDB-2917 are related to this item. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
